How can a BMW 530i have a higher green rating then a Mercedes E320 Bluetec?

- Soot production is given a very high score in the Federal and California rating systems. Even with Bluetech, soot production from a Diesel motor is significantly higher than gas.
- Because the MBZ applies to the diesel...is the BMW 530i gas?
